We always intend for our distillery-exclusive black label releases to represent the corners of our inventory that are as exceptional as they are completely irreproducible. Even among those, Barrel-Strength Single Barrel #1917 makes a strong case for beingparticularlyunique. In the early days of our Peated Bourbon production, peated malt only represented half of the 25% share of malt in the mashbill. While we eventually grew to favor a heavier (25%) share of peated malt in our Peated Bourbon recipe, we had by then already designated a single 53-gallon barrel containing original-recipe Peated Bourbon for advanced aging in the Paymaster building. Bottled now as it nears 9 years old, this 147.6-proof 8-year whiskey is like nothing we’ve released; while a throughline of house-favorite older-age notes like rum-soaked raisin and stewed cherries can be found alongside some of our current Peated Bourbon’s brisket-like qualities, this whiskey’s advanced age, high concentration, and more subtle share of peated malt has also resulted in an exceptionally complex earthiness that persists throughout the surprisingly easy-drinking palate. The finish, too, is particularly notable, as highly complex smokier elements balance beautifully with a persistent wood-sugar sweetness. Simply put: we probably couldn’t do it again even if we tried. Only 131 bottles produced.
